Artist Statement:
Nostalgia is a figurative piece meant to encourage the practice of empathy. It is one of three of my recent works that showcase human emotion. I created the work by taking a life cast of my mother. I asked her to channel memories of raising her four children specifically related to Christmastime. We played home videos related to this theme while she sat for the casting. I took steps to transform her plaster impression into cast aluminum. I embedded steel into the wax so that it would be secured to the aluminum and welded forged steel rods to create my imagining of hair. It was my intent for viewers to get a sense of her emotion and perhaps respond to it through facial expression or commentary to one another.
