Artist Statement: " Reaching was originally designed simply as an exercise in attempting to make a piece especially dynamic in the round, specifically referencing back to my favorite elements of design by Late Renaissance and Baroque masters such as Michelangelo and Bernini, but expressed as clean and simply as I could, minus the frills and extravagant detail I often enjoy but find distracting. Following examples such as Bernini’s David I tried to use curves intended to visually lead the bystander around the sculpture, and intersecting diagonal lines meant to create a different view from every direction. The title Reaching actually comes at the suggestion of a friend who pointed out that it looks somewhat reminiscent of an open hand, but I find especially appealing as it also alludes to the visual intrusion of the viewer’s personal space Baroque sculpture is so frequently good at." |
