Artist Statement:
"Solo Spyro" was the first of three large sculptures created from the "Biological" series I began in 2014. I was copying shapes from the microbial world which can only be seen under a microscope in a petri lab dish. These included viruses, bacteria and parasites. These are shapes not normally seen in our day to day experience, and by multiplying their size millions of times, I hoped to divorce the shapes from their dangerous predatory sources and find them more playful and entertaining.
I have three visual systems at play in "Solo Spyro". First, the organic, based on the shape of a spirochete bacteria (e.g. lime disease). Second, there is a shadow box construction within the organic shell, which serves as a counterpoint. The light which seeps out is shaped by both the grid of the insert and the organic shell. Thirdly, there is a contemporary hieroglyphic cascading down both sides which indicates that the origin of this sculpture may be Alien and may bear an important message to human kind.
